Dr. Carolyn Hawley and other investigators at VCU have just received an 18-month Presidential Research Quest Fund to explore health and wellness behaviors of college students who engage in social media gaming. Specifically, the study will examine the relationships between social media gaming and education, health, and wellness among this population. Such explorations will lead to the development of informational resources targeted at college students.
There are two aims of the study which will be carried out in three steps.
Aim 1: Describe the social gaming patterns of college students and identify potential associations between their gaming patterns and behavioral outcomes, such as academic performance.
Aim 2: Pilot an online research methodology focusing on an epidemiological profile of college students who are social gaming users. |
Step 1: Conduct a literature review and report findings.
Step 2: Collect qualitative data via three focus groups. Step 3: Collect quantitative data via survey. |
It is anticipated that findings from this pilot study will lead to future studies and add to the growing evidence base surrounding gambling disorder and risk factors.
